Pallet dimensions are dependent on the standard for the industry it is serving, federal regulations, and your customization! Pallets can be made of new and/or used lumber in all different sizes.

A GMA, or Grocery Manufacturing Association, 48 x 40 pallet is a standard grade pallet that is used in most food or big box stores. This also tends to be one of our more popular sizes as it is standard for the amount of floor space it occupies. It also gives the benefit of truck and shipping space per cube, which will allow you to get more material in your loads per cube. The racking system of these pallets has also been found helpful to those in both the manufacturing and warehouse industries.

The 48 x 40 pallet can come in a variety of types, including: new, recycled or remanufactured,. This can be built in a combination of new and used materials or all used materials, depending on your preference and availability. This style of pallet is typically four-way notched and flush to the runners.

The 48 x 40 represents the length of the stringers or runners. The 40 is the width and represents the length of the boards.

The industry standards for a 48 x 40 GMA 4-way new flush pallet are the following:

  • 3 Runners: 1-3/8 x 3-1/2 x 48
  • 2 Top Deck:  5/8 x 5-1/2 x 40
  • 5 Top Deck:  5/8 x 3-1/2 x 40
  • 2 Bottom Deck: 5/8 x 5-1/2 x 40
  • 3 Bottom Deck: 5/8 x 3-1/2 x 40

Our Reconditioned pallets are now available in the standard 48 x 40 as well. The industry standards for this type of pallet is:

  • Premium Grade AAA with 5-1/2″ lead boards on both top and bottom.
  • Regular Grade A with 7 top and 3-1/2“ boards and 3-5 bottom 3-1/2“ boards**
  • Grade B with plugged or companion stringers***

**Boards can have repaired stringers with plates or staples.

***Pallets can have multiple repairs to stringers

Reconditioned pallets also can come in the following sizes:

  • 36 x 36
  • 40 x 40
  • 44 x 44

Pallets are required to be heat treated to comply with export regulations, specifically ISPM15, which states:

“All Wood Packaging Materials (WPM) must be heat treated to achieve a minimum wood core temperature of 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes. The WPM must be  marked in a visible location on each article, preferably on at least two opposite sides of the article, with a legible and permanent mark, approved by the IPPC, to certify that wood packaging material has been subjected to an approved treatment”
(US Customs and Border Protection. (2024, April 22). Import and Export Requirements for Wood Packaging Material into the United States. CBP Customer Service.)

Any pallets that will be exported are required to be heat-treated and stamp-certified ISPM15. This heat treatment ensures insects that are known to be harmful species, such as the Emerald Ash Borer, cannot get into the United States via packaging.
