Pallet Recycling
An estimated 2 billion pallets are in use daily in the United States. While wood pallets can be used multiple times for their main purpose, a Pallet Recycling program can reduce a company’s carbon footprint by using all the parts of the pallet.
Knotty Pallet is a leader in sustainability and promotes pallet recycling as one of the biggest impacts on sustainability for the industry. Knotty Pallet repurposes used pallets in repairing, dismantling and utilizing material in repairs or remanufacturing pallets and mulching material that is non conforming. This process reduces waste and costs and provides a reprieve to our environment for the manufacturing of new pallets.
By repurposing previously used pallets, we start to reduce the need to produce more new pallets made with more trees. By using what has already been made, we are preserving our environment one tree at a time.

Pallets are required to be heat treated to comply with export regulations, specifically ISPM15, which states:
“All Wood Packaging Materials (WPM) must be heat treated to achieve a minimum wood core temperature of 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes. The WPM must be marked in a visible location on each article, preferably on at least two opposite sides of the article, with a legible and permanent mark, approved by the IPPC, to certify that wood packaging material has been subjected to an approved treatment”
(US Customs and Border Protection. (2024, April 22). Import and Export Requirements for Wood Packaging Material into the United States. CBP Customer Service.)
Any pallets that will be exported are required to be heat-treated and stamp-certified ISPM15. This heat treatment ensures insects that are known to be harmful species, such as the Emerald Ash Borer, cannot get into the United States via packaging.
